Laureen Ahlers

Microbiologist, Instructor

Being part of the Girls* on Ice Expeditions team brings together my passions for science, nature, and mentorship. The curiosity and critical thinking we build through science are valuable skills, no matter what path you choose.

I am a PhD student at EPFL in Sion, where I study the relationship between soil microbiomes in high-altitude mountain environments and greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. My research explores how tiny soil organisms influence our climate and how fragile alpine ecosystems respond to environmental change. I am deeply interested in climate change, life in cold environments and in understanding how we can better protect those environments.

Outside of research, you’ll usually find me in the mountains or the far North – hiking and exploring new landscapes, or reading and knitting for a cozy day at home. I am looking forward to sharing my enthusiasm for science and nature, encourage young girls*park and spark curiosity for the natural world.
