Kate Hale

Snow Hydrologist, G*OIC Board Member

Pronouns: She/Her

As a snow hydrologist, I evaluate the impacts of climate change on the local to regional snowpacks, glacial terrain, and downstream water resources while teaching and mentoring students in the classroom, laboratory, and field. I am an Assistant Professor in the University of British Columbia Department of Geography and the director of the Snow Water Resources research group. I hold a PhD and MA from the University of Colorado Boulder and a BS from Georgetown University, and I am continually excited about a lifetime of learning about and exploring cold regions. (new paragraph) My sense of awe for outdoor spaces grew from a decade of canoeing across the Northwest Territories and Nunavut each summer. Arctic and alpine waterways ultimately led me to pursuing scientific research and outdoor collaborations and communities. Now, during the moments between science and connecting with friends and family, I fill my time with running, skiing, climbing, and mountain biking. In line with the mission of the G*OIC, I believe strongly in the power of experiential education, mentorship, and the outdoors to inspire the next generation of scientists and leaders.
