Justine Berg

Hydrologist, Instructor

Pronouns: she/hers/her

During my studies in Environmental Sciences and Hydrology, I developed a fascination for hydrological processes in snow and glacier dominated regions. For my master's thesis, I had the opportunity to work at the Swiss Snow and Avalanche Research Institute (SLF) in Davos, where I could experience and understand snow processes both through models and the surrounding mountains. My next step brought me to the University of Bern, where I research hydrological processes in glaciated areas of the Himalayas as part of a collaborative project with Indian universities. There, I had the opportunity to spend several weeks doing fieldwork on site.

Growing up in central Germany, the surrounding mountains were far from my everyday life. It was only during my studies that I gradually fell in love with the mountain world: scientifically through my fascination with glacier and snow processes, and personally through discovering these landscapes on foot, by bike, or on skis. I want to now share this connection between scientific curiosity and personal passion. From my own experience, I know that access to the mountains is not a given. That's why I'm excited to make this experience possible through Girls* on Ice and inspire enthusiasm for the mountains.

When I'm not optimizing my hydrological models at the office, I spend as much time as possible in the mountains, whether road cycling, ski touring, or climbing. In the evenings on the couch, I love working on crochet projects.
