Brooke Burns is from the rural coal town of Danville, West Virginia. She’s active in team sports including soccer, basketball, and track and field. She loves science and dreams of becoming an aerospace engineer when she grows up. Brooke is hardworking and determined, and excited to meet the other Girls on Ice participants and experience the world beyond her small, tight-knit community.
Faith and her family immigrated from the Ivory Coast at the age of 3. Although Faith lives in Syracuse, New York at the moment, she will be moving to Des Moines, Iowa this summer. She loves to challenge herself and try new things. Faith loves science and math, and her dream is to one day become a Mechanical Engineer
LeeAna is originally from China, but lives in Berne, in upstate New York. She is homeschooled and spends much of her free time caring for the farm animals, garden and beekeeping on her family’s small farm. She hopes to someday turn her beekeeping into a business. She loves nature, drawing,and any opportunity to explore the outdoors.
Shannon is from Lawrenceville, Georgia. She’s a gymnast, which has taught her the importance of determination, confidence, and a positive outlook. She is very interested in ecology and the environment, and hopes to study environmental law in college.
Tess is from Longview, Washington. She was born in Ukraine, but has been in the United States since she was three. She loves being outdoors - it is where she feels capable and powerful. She embraces new challenges and trying new things, and is excited for the new experiences that Girls on Ice will give her.
Tsering is from Camas, Washington. She is a research intern in a biomedical lab at the Oregon Health and Sciences University that studies the mechanisms of aminoglycosides in order to prevent hearing loss. She hopes to pursue a career in scientific research, and will be the first member of her family to attend college.
Shania Jackson is from Ashland, Wisconsin. She loves being outside. She’s an avid advocate for the environment, and uses her photography and filmmaking skills to highlight issues she cares about. She and a few other students recently made a documentary about the proposed Penokee Hills Mine in her community.
