Brita Irving

Oceanographer, Co-Founder Girls on water

I first got involved with Inspiring Girls Expeditions in 2012 volunteering as a gear fairy for the Girls on Ice Alaska program.  I was amazed that such an incredible program existed and found the program philosophy and women involved truly inspirational.  When I heard about the Inspiring Girls Instructor Workshop I lept at the opportunity.  I am thrilled to be a part of the international group of women scientists, educators, and guides developing more programs that follow the structure and philosophy of Girls on Ice.

I am an atmospheric scientist turned oceanographer working for the University of Alaska Fairbanks as a research technician. After completing my BS in Physics and Math in 2010, I continued on to earn an MS in Atmospheric Science Remote Sensing from UAF in 2012.  I split my time between exploring mountains and rivers as a wilderness guide in the summer, piloting underwater autonomous vehicles around the Arctic and Antarctic seas, and getting outside as much as possible. Growing up in Fairbanks, my scientific curiosity started at a young age exploring the interior and has developed into a deeply rooted passion for Alaska, scientific exploration, and wilderness conservation and preservation. The opportunities Inspiring Girls Expeditions provide are phenomenal and I look forward to sharing my passions and knowledge with future women scientists and artists.
